Habitat Restoration

Habitat restoration is the Friends’ main focus. During Fort Worden’s time as a military base, the Army clear-cut many areas of the park to facilitate construction and operations. These clear-cuts made ideal environments for the many species of noxious weeds and invasive plants that went on to establish themselves throughout the park. These invasives threaten habitat and harm both humans and animals.

As part of our ongoing habitat restoration efforts in the park, we work with volunteers, park staff, and contractors to remove these invasives and re-plant with native species.

Our main expenses for our ongoing habitat restoration efforts are plants/seeds, and contractors.

How do we do it?

We work with park leadership to determine what areas to tackle and what to plant.
Volunteers remove invasive species and clear areas for planting.
Contractors such as Agate Landscaping remove invasives and maintain difficult areas.
We plant natives to combat noxious and invasive species and restore native habitat.
